Delhi Minister Atishi Addresses Tragic Deaths at Coaching Institute Due to Waterlogging

Following the deaths of three students at a coaching institute in Old Rajinder Nagar due to severe waterlogging, Delhi Minister Atishi announced that the interim inquiry report by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been received. The report highlighted that the drain in the area was the main reason for the waterlogging and that the library set up in the coaching center was illegal.

Atishi stated, “An interim inquiry report has been received by MCD, and a preliminary report has been submitted. Two key things that came to light regarding the coaching center incident were that the drain, which is the reason for the waterlogging in that area, was encroached upon by all the coaching centers there, because of which water was not going down the drain. The other thing is, the way coaching centers were running classes in the basement and libraries were set up, was 100 percent illegal. The permission given to the coaching center by the building department was to use the basement only as a storage or parking space. The rest of the inquiry report will come in seven days.”

She added that the Junior Engineer responsible for the drain has been permanently terminated, and the Assistant Engineer has been suspended. Further investigation will be carried out on both officers. Atishi also mentioned that after the magisterial report is received in six days, strict action will be taken against those found responsible.

Mayor Shelly Oberoi has instructed to bulldoze all coaching centers encroaching on the drains. Additionally, 30 coaching centers in areas like Rajendra Nagar, Preet Vihar, Laxmi Nagar, and Mukherjee Nagar have been sealed for setting up libraries in the basements, including Drishti IAS Centre and Sanskruti Academy. Notices have been sent to 200 other institutes.

Mayor Oberoi conveyed her condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that all demands of the students will be heard. A meeting will be held with the students, and new regulations will be passed in the Delhi Assembly. She emphasized that the MCD will have to follow all new rules and regulations, and strict actions will be taken against those found guilty.
