Delhi Metro Sees Record Passengers Despite Heavy Rains; Tragic Incidents Reported

Despite heavy rains lashing Delhi, the Delhi Metro saw a significant surge in passenger journeys. On June 28, 2024, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) reported over 69 lakh passenger journeys, a notable increase from the 62 lakh recorded the previous day. The Metro services operated with a punctuality of 99.95% despite the weather conditions.

However, the heavy rains also led to tragic incidents. Two boys drowned near the rainwater-flooded Siraspur underpass in northwest Delhi’s Samaypur Badli area. The police received a call about the drowning of a 12-year-old boy and found the underpass flooded with 2.5-3 feet of water. The fire brigade recovered the bodies of two boys, suspected to have drowned while taking a bath.

In another incident, two children aged 8 and 10 drowned after falling into a deep rainwater ditch in the New Usmanpur area. They were residents of Som Bazaar, Gamri.

Additionally, three laborers died when a wall collapsed at a construction site in Vasant Vihar amid heavy rain. Their bodies were pulled out by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts more heavy rainfall in Delhi and other North Indian states over the next two days. Warnings have been issued for several regions, including UP, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, East Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam.
