Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi Takes Action After Tragic Flooding in Coaching Centre Basements
New Delhi [India], July 29: After a tragic incident where three students died due to flooding in a coaching centre basement in Old Rajinder Nagar, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) initiated action against coaching centres violating building bye-laws. On Sunday, the MCD sealed the basements of 13 coaching centres in Karol Bagh amid student protests.
Strict Action Ordered
Mayor Shelly Oberoi has directed strict action against coaching centres operating illegally in basements. The students complained about the mandatory biometric access to enter libraries, which were mostly located in basements. Manish Kumar, a student, explained that the biometric system got blocked during the flooding, trapping students inside. He emphasized the need for alternatives to biometrics to prevent such tragedies.
Student Concerns
Another student, Punit Singh, highlighted the lack of emergency exits and balconies in the buildings, making rescue difficult in emergencies. He questioned who would be accountable for their safety, noting that 70-75% of libraries in the region are controlled by biometrics and located in basements.
Protests and Demands
Student protests continued in Karol Bagh, with demands for action against coaching centres, rent regulation, insurance cover, and measures to prevent waterlogging and electrocution during rains. The Delhi Police have arrested the owner and coordinator of the coaching centre involved in the incident, charging them with culpable homicide.
