Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi Plans Libraries in Memory of Deceased UPSC Aspirants

Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has ordered the establishment of four public libraries in memory of three UPSC aspirants who tragically lost their lives in a basement flood in Rajinder Nagar on July 27. The proposed libraries will be located in Rajinder Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Patel Nagar, and Ber Sarai.

Mayor Oberoi highlighted the need for more public libraries for students preparing for competitive exams, as many cannot afford the high fees of private libraries. She suggested that the budget for this initiative could come from the Mayor’s discretionary funds.

Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner Ashwani Kumar has also taken steps to prevent future tragedies by ordering a survey of buildings with basements and taking action against those misusing them. He emphasized the need for separate entry and exit gates for basements and making building plans publicly available to detect violations.

Earlier, the MCD Commissioner met with a delegation of UPSC aspirants to discuss their concerns and assured them of proper redress. So far, seven people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
