Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi Calls for Fairer Election Process for MCD Ward Committees

New Delhi, India – Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has refused to appoint a presiding officer for the MCD ward committee elections scheduled for September 4. She cited concerns over an ‘undemocratic process and insufficient notice’ for filing nominations.

Oberoi criticized the short timeframe given for the election process. She directed the Commissioner to restart the election process with at least a week’s notice to ensure fairness. ‘Providing sufficient time for candidates to complete the nomination process is essential to upholding the democratic principles of fairness and reasonableness,’ she stated.

The election notice was issued on August 28, 2024, with a deadline for filing nominations set for August 30, 2024, allowing only one clear day for candidates to file their nominations. Oberoi described this as ‘unprecedented in the history of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’ and a significant departure from fair democratic practices.

Oberoi received multiple representations from councillors unable to file nominations due to the short notice. She requested the Commissioner to extend the timeframe for filing nominations by a few more days, suggesting that even a one-week extension would address the concerns raised.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, accused Oberoi and the Aam Aadmi Party of accepting defeat and stalling development work. He stated that two years of the municipal corporation have been wasted by the Aam Aadmi Party, and development work inwards has come to a standstill.
