Delhi LG VK Saxena Takes Action on Munak Canal Breach

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has taken serious note of a massive breach in the CLC branch of Munak Canal. He has advised the Chief Secretary to coordinate with the Water Minister and Minister of Flood Control Department to ensure the matter is addressed with Haryana Authorities. The un-lined segment of the canal should be prioritized for lining to avoid future breaches and water losses.

The LG has given several directions, including:

  • CEO of Delhi Jal Board to reach the spot with engineers and coordinate with Haryana authorities for restoration.
  • NDRF teams to evacuate affected people.
  • Irrigation and Flood Control Department to deploy pumps and provide additional boats.
  • DUSIB to provide relief and rehabilitation measures.
  • Disaster Management Cell to provide relief as per norms.
  • Area District Magistrate to coordinate relief and rescue operations.
  • Health Department to ensure medical teams are in place.

On Thursday, a sub-branch of the Munak Canal sustained a breach in the Bawana region of North Delhi, leading to floods in nearby areas. Delhi’s Water Minister Atishi stated that repair work has started and will be completed by the afternoon. Flood Control Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj confirmed that the Flood Department is prepared to assist the Delhi Jal Board.

Local resident Alam reported that water had entered every block of JJ Colony and criticized the administration’s efforts. Bharadwaj assured that new machinery and embankments are in place to prevent future flooding.
