Delhi LG VK Saxena Praises DDA for Solving Airport Flooding Problem
Delhi LG VK Saxena has praised the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for their efforts in constructing a drain that prevented waterlogging at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport during recent heavy rains.
Background
After taking office, LG Saxena prioritized the construction of the airport drain from IGI Airport to PWD Trunk Drain No. 2. The airport had faced severe flooding issues in the past, including a notorious incident in 2019 that caused international embarrassment.
Project Delays and Completion
The DDA began the project in 2020, but it was delayed for over two years due to lack of permissions from the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD). After taking charge, LG Saxena directed the DDA to seek intervention from the Delhi High Court, which led to the necessary permissions being granted in August 2022. The project was completed in a record 15 months and inaugurated in December 2023.
Successful Implementation
During a heavy downpour on July 28, 2024, the drain operated at its full capacity of 80 cumec, effectively preventing waterlogging at the airport and surrounding areas for the first time in years.
Other Flood Prevention Efforts
Similar interventions by the DDA in East Delhi have helped reduce flooding in areas like Trilokpuri and Mayur Vihar. LG Saxena had instructed the construction of channels to direct water into Sanjay Lake, which also helped recharge the lake with fresh rainwater.
Additionally, five water bodies have been created around the TD-2 and Airport Drain to absorb overflow. Sector-8 in Dwarka is also set to benefit from these efforts once ongoing work is completed by August this year.
Conclusion
LG Saxena emphasized that the persistent flooding issues in Delhi can be effectively addressed through proactive drainage solutions, as demonstrated by the successful projects at the Airport Drain and Sanjay Lake.
