Details of the Incident

The fire occurred at Baby Care New Born Child Hospital in Vivek Vihar, Delhi. The fire brigade and police rescued 12 infants, but eight newborns tragically lost their lives. The hospital was found to have burst oxygen cylinders, no fire extinguishers, and no emergency exits.

Legal Proceedings

Dr. Naveen Khichi and Dr. Akash were arrested on May 26 and May 27, 2024, respectively. They are charged under sections 304, 308, and 34 of the IPC, and section 75 of the JJ Act. The charge sheet was filed in Karkardooma Court, and the next hearing is on August 2, 2024.

Investigation Findings

The investigation revealed that the hospital’s license had expired on March 31, 2024, and it was only permitted to have five beds, but 12 newborns were admitted at the time of the fire. The doctors were found to be unqualified to treat newborns in need of neonatal intensive care.
