Delhi High Court to Hear Umar Khalid’s Bail Plea on October 7
The Delhi High Court has scheduled the bail pleas of JNU student leader Umar Khalid and others accused in a UAPA case related to the 2020 Delhi riots for October 7. A division bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Girish Kathpaliya will hear the matter.
Umar Khalid, who has been in custody since September 2020, had his bail previously denied by the trial court. The High Court had earlier noted that the allegations against him were prima facie true. The case involves multiple accused, including Abdul Khalid Saifi, Gulfisha Fatima, Sharjeel Imam, and Shadab Ahmed.
On May 28, Delhi’s Karkardooma Court refused to grant regular bail to Umar Khalid, citing that the High Court had already analyzed the case and found the allegations to be prima facie true. The trial court emphasized that a surface analysis of the evidence was sufficient to deny bail.
Umar Khalid had sought regular bail under Section 437 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, read with Section 43D (5) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967. His bail petition was dismissed by the trial court, and he has now moved to the High Court.
