Delhi High Court Seeks Report on Tree Cutting Near Historic Monuments in Hazrat Nizamuddin

The Delhi High Court has asked the forest department for a status report on the cutting of trees near Mazar-e-Ghalib and Chausathh Khamba in Hazrat Nizamuddin. Justice Sanjeev Narula issued notices to the Forest Department, MCD, Delhi Police, the Superintending Archaeologist, and other departments, directing them to file a report within two weeks.

The matter has been scheduled for a further hearing on September 17. Meanwhile, the High Court has instructed the authorities to protect the trees and ensure no further cutting occurs.

The Hazrat Nizamuddin Welfare Association, represented by Advocate Mujeeb Ahmed, filed a petition seeking action against those responsible for the tree cutting. The petition also requested the removal of illegal high-rise tin sheds used to hide the tree cutting and illegal construction near the protected monuments.

The petition stated that in May, antisocial elements began cutting down full-grown trees like neem, banyan, and peepal near the monuments. Despite complaints, no action was taken. The petitioner has asked for the protection of the trees and the local ecosystem, as well as legal action against the illegal construction under the AMSAR Act, 1958.
