Delhi High Court Seeks Police Response on Activist Devangana Kalita’s Plea
The Delhi High Court has asked the police to respond to a request from activist Devangana Kalita. She wants the police to preserve and reconstruct the case diary related to the investigation of the North East Delhi violence that occurred in February 2020. This violence happened during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), coinciding with the visit of then-US President Donald Trump to India.
Justice Jasmeet Singh, after hearing the submissions, did not immediately order the police to preserve the case diary but directed them to respond to Kalita’s plea. The next hearing is scheduled for November 25. Earlier, in September, the Delhi High Court had instructed the trial court not to finalize charges in the alleged conspiracy behind the violence while considering Kalita’s plea.
Kalita is seeking access to certain videos and WhatsApp chats from two cases, including one under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), related to the communal violence during the 2020 protests.
