Delhi High Court Reviews Bail Plea of Former PFI Leader Ibrahim Puthanathani
The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) regarding the bail plea of Ibrahim Puthanathani, the former national coordinator of the Popular Front of India (PFI). Puthanathani has been in custody for two years, following his arrest in 2022. The division bench, comprising Justices Prathiba M Singh and Amit Sharma, has requested a response from the NIA within two weeks, with the next hearing scheduled for November 11.
Advocate Kartik Venu, representing Puthanathani, participated in the proceedings via video conferencing. He highlighted that Puthanathani’s previous bail application was rejected by the trial court at Patiala House, New Delhi. In June 2023, Puthanathani was granted six hours of custody parole.
Puthanathani was charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in April 2022, accused of conspiring to collect funds for terror activities and allegedly running terror camps. The NIA charged several PFI leaders following a nationwide crackdown after the organization was banned by the central government on September 28, 2022.
