Delhi High Court Releases Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk
On October 3, the Delhi High Court was informed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that the prohibitory order issued by Delhi Police had been modified, leading to the release of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk from detention. The order, initially issued on September 30, restricted gatherings of five or more people and protests in public areas until October 5. Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela disposed of petitions challenging the order and seeking Wangchuk’s release.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing another petitioner, claimed that Wangchuk and others were taken to Ambedkar Bhawan and restrained there, despite their intention to raise climate awareness at Jantar Mantar. The court requested affidavits from both the Delhi Police and the petitioner regarding these claims. The petitions also sought the release of around 120 individuals from Ladakh, including Wangchuk, who were reportedly detained at the Delhi border while advocating for sixth schedule status for Ladakh.
