Delhi High Court Orders Baba Ramdev to Remove Misleading Claims About Coronil

The Delhi High Court has issued an interim order directing Baba Ramdev, Acharya Bal Krishan, and others to remove statements and posts that accuse allopathic medicine and doctors of causing deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic. The court emphasized that such claims could mislead the public and harm the reputation of Ayurveda.

The court’s decision follows a lawsuit filed by various doctors’ associations, including those from AIIMS Rishikesh, Patna, and Bhubaneswar, and other medical institutions. The lawsuit challenges Ramdev’s claim that Patanjali’s product, Coronil, is a cure for COVID-19, arguing that these statements lack scientific evidence and misrepresent the product, which is only licensed as an immunity booster.

Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani directed the individuals to take down their statements from social media platforms within three days. If they fail to comply, social media intermediaries will remove the content. The court noted that continuing to promote Coronil as a cure could put public health at risk and damage the reputation of Ayurveda.

Ramdev’s senior lawyer stated that Ramdev is committed to adhering to an undertaking previously given in the Supreme Court regarding advertisements for Patanjali products and expressed willingness to provide a similar undertaking in the Delhi High Court.

The court’s order aims to prevent the spread of misinformation and ensure that public health is not compromised by unverified claims.
