Delhi High Court Demands Cleanup Before DUSU Election Results
The Delhi High Court has summoned candidates involved in the alleged defacement of public property during the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections. The court, led by Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, has ordered these candidates to appear on October 28 to explain their actions. The court emphasized that no election results will be announced until the defacement is addressed.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has requested a deposit of Rs 1 crore from Delhi University for cleaning expenses across 12 zones. The court has asked for a status report from the Delhi Police and MCD by the next hearing. The court expressed frustration over the lack of action by the Delhi Police regarding unnumbered vehicles and safety concerns.
A subcommittee has been formed by Delhi University to take responsibility for the cleanup. The court stressed that elections should celebrate democracy, not be a means for “money laundering.” The Chief Justice also highlighted civic issues like rising dengue and malaria cases due to littering.
The court’s observations followed an application from two candidates seeking the declaration of election results. They assured the court of mobilizing students to clean and repaint college premises. The application is part of a larger petition to hold DUSU candidates accountable for property damage. The court had previously suspended vote counting due to these violations.
