Delhi High Court Asked to Investigate Tragic Deaths of UPSC Aspirants Due to Waterlogging
In New Delhi, a tragic incident involving the deaths of three UPSC aspirants due to waterlogging at a coaching centre in Rajinder Nagar has led to a plea being filed in the Delhi High Court. The plea seeks immediate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Plea Filed by NGO
The plea was moved by the NGO Hindu Rashtriya Pravasi Manch. It calls for an independent inquiry to determine the responsibility of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Rao IAS Study Centre, and the Government of Delhi. The plea also demands compensation for the victims’ families and the injured.
Advocate’s Statement
Advocate Dr. AP Singh, representing the NGO, stated that despite ongoing protests by affected families and citizens, no higher authority has addressed the issue. The petitioner and affected families demand transparency in the number of injuries and deaths and immediate action against those responsible for the negligence.
Negligence and Safety Concerns
The plea highlights the negligence of the MCD in maintaining proper drainage and safety measures. It also points out the illegal operations and lack of safety measures at the Rao IAS Study Centre’s basement, which worsened the situation.
Previous Incidents
The city’s educational coaching centres have been criticized for flouting safety norms. Last year, a fire at a coaching institute in Mukherjee Nagar forced students to jump out of windows to escape. In May, the Delhi High Court ordered the closure of any coaching centre not adhering to fire safety norms.
Recent Incident
Three civil services aspirants died after the basement of a coaching centre in Old Rajendra Nagar was flooded following heavy rainfall. The Delhi Fire Department received a call about the waterlogged basement at around 7 pm on Saturday.
