New Delhi, India – In a tragic case involving the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl, the Rohini District Court in Delhi has sentenced a 25-year-old man to life imprisonment. The court determined that the accused, who was a minor at the time of the crime, should be tried as an adult.

Details of the Case

The crime was committed in 2017 when the accused was over 16 years old. Special Judge Sushil Bala Dagar sentenced the accused to life imprisonment for murder and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000. Additionally, the court sentenced him to 10 years in prison and another Rs 10,000 fine for the rape of the minor.

Compensation for the Family

The court directed the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to pay Rs 17 lakh as compensation to the family of the deceased girl.

Accused’s Background

The court noted that the accused, now 25 years old, had worked in various jobs, including at a flour mill and in construction. He also had experience cooking in a restaurant.

Prosecution’s Argument

The Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) for Delhi Police argued for the maximum punishment, stating that the severity of the crime showed that reformation was not possible. The SPP emphasized that the gravity of the offense warranted the harshest penalty.

The case was initially registered in 2017, and after an investigation, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) decided that the accused should be tried as an adult. The trial concluded with the court finding the accused guilty under sections 376(2) and 302 of the IPC, and Section 6 of the POCSO Act.
