Delhi Court Reserves Bail Order for Manuj Kathuria in UPSC Aspirants’ Death Case

On Thursday, Delhi’s Tis Hazari court reserved its order on the bail plea of Manuj Kathuria, an SUV driver accused of causing the deaths of three UPSC aspirants at a coaching center in Old Rajinder Nagar. Kathuria allegedly drove his vehicle in a rash and negligent manner, causing water to enter the basement.

After hearing the bail plea, Additional Sessions Judge Rakesh Kumar-IV reserved the order. The Delhi police have filed a status report on the bail plea, stating they are not pressing charges of culpable homicide. Kathuria’s counsel argued that all offenses are now bailable and that bail is the right of the accused.

This plea follows the Tis Hazari court’s dismissal of bail applications from Kathuria and four others involved in the case. Judicial Magistrate First Class Vinod Kumar observed that CCTV footage showed Kathuria driving at high speed through a heavily waterlogged road, causing water to enter the basement and resulting in the deaths of three students.

The bail plea stated that several CCTV videos related to the incident are circulating on social media, but the police are relying on three specific videos, copies of which have not been provided to the accused. Kathuria’s counsel argued that there was no overspeeding and that he was falsely implicated.

Additional Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava opposed the bail application, showing pictures of the vehicle and arguing that Kathuria aggravated the incident by driving recklessly. He also requested the court to consider the early stage of the investigation and the potential influence on witnesses.
