Delhi Court Orders Police to Protect Woman Wrestler in Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh Case

A Delhi court has directed the police to ensure the safety of a woman wrestler scheduled to testify in the Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh sexual harassment case. The Rouse Avenue Court issued this order after an urgent hearing, responding to concerns raised by three women wrestlers about the withdrawal of their security.

Immediate Security Measures

The court instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) to make immediate and appropriate arrangements for the woman’s security until her testimony is complete and further orders are issued. The court also issued a notice to the DCP for the next hearing date and requested a compliance report.

Background

The complainants sought the court’s intervention to ensure their safety so they could testify without fear. The DCP had previously affirmed before the Supreme Court that security arrangements were made for the complainants after assessing the threat perception. However, the complainants were recently informed that their security had been withdrawn just one day before the scheduled testimony.

Police Response

Delhi Police responded to a tweet by wrestler Vinesh Phogat, explaining that the Personal Security Officers (PSOs) were called for routine firing and training practices and would return shortly. The wrestlers were briefed about this situation.

The next hearing is scheduled for August 23, where the reasons for the withdrawal of security will be discussed in detail.
