Delhi CM Atishi Reinstates Bus Marshals and Volunteers to Combat Pollution

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi has announced the re-employment of bus marshals and Civil Defence Volunteers (CDVs) to tackle pollution. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi stated that the registration process for these positions will start within a week. These workers will be deployed in various roles, including monitoring pollution hotspots and participating in public awareness campaigns.

Deployment and Responsibilities

Bus marshals will be stationed at PUC certificate centers, help enforce GRAP restrictions, and assist in MCD inspections. They will also work with the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and staff the Green War Room. CM Atishi emphasized the importance of these roles in combating pollution.

Criticism of BJP and Assurance to Residents

CM Atishi criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for previously dismissing these workers and assured residents that her government would find solutions to their problems. She highlighted the success of past campaigns like ‘Odd-Even’ and ‘Red Light On, Gaadi Off’, crediting the CDVs as ‘green warriors’.

Pollution Challenges Ahead

CM Atishi warned of rising pollution levels due to stubble burning, firecrackers, and vehicle emissions. Despite a firecracker ban, the air quality is expected to remain poor. She has requested immediate action from the Lieutenant Governor and plans to meet with police officials to address the issue.

Current Air Quality Status

Delhi’s air quality remains in the ‘Very Poor’ category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 328. The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) predicts continued poor air quality in the coming week.
