Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Challenges Arrest by CBI in Excise Policy Case
New Delhi [India], July 2: The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding a plea by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal against his arrest in the Excise Policy case. The court has asked the CBI to respond within 7 days, with a rejoinder to be filed 2 days thereafter. A detailed hearing is scheduled for July 17, 2024.
Senior Advocate Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, stated that the arrest violates legal mandates under Sections 41 and 60A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). Kejriwal’s plea argues that the arrest lacks proper justification, especially since the investigation has been ongoing for two years.
The CBI alleges that Kejriwal did not cooperate during interrogation and gave evasive replies. They also claim he may have influenced witnesses and tampered with evidence. Kejriwal, however, maintains his innocence and argues that the arrest is based on outdated material.
The court will further examine the case on July 17, 2024.
