Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Bail Stayed by High Court in Excise Policy Case

New Delhi [India], June 26: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) examined Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Tihar Jail and recorded his statement related to the Excise Policy case. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, 2024, in the Excise Policy money laundering case and is currently in judicial custody.

The CBI received permission to produce Kejriwal before the concerned trial court on Wednesday. According to CBI sources, he is likely to be officially arrested in the case before the court today.

Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) lawyer posted on X, criticizing the Modi government and accusing it of using dirty tricks to prevent Kejriwal’s release.

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court stayed Kejriwal’s bail order, stating that the trial court did not properly record its satisfaction with the legal conditions required under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain noted that the trial court did not appreciate the documents and arguments properly.

A vacation bench of Justices Manoj Misra and SVN Bhatti found the High Court’s interim stay on Kejriwal’s bail unusual and decided to review the case soon. The High Court had previously ordered an interim stay on Kejriwal’s bail and asked both sides to submit written arguments.

Kejriwal appealed to the Supreme Court, which decided to wait for the High Court’s final order. The High Court had halted Kejriwal’s release until its final decision.
