New Delhi, India – Delhi BJP President Virendraa Sachdeva has criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for postponing the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Standing Committee election. He accused AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia of undermining democracy and attempting to take away the rights of Dalits, as this year a Dalit mayor is supposed to be elected.

Sachdeva questioned why AAP is avoiding the elections despite having a majority and accused them of not trusting their own councillors. He also pointed out that mobile phones are prohibited in any polls and questioned AAP’s insistence on carrying them during the election.

The election was postponed after AAP councillors protested against the mobile phone ban. MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar issued an order for the election to be held on September 27 at 1 pm. The Lt Governor V K Saxena directed that the election be conducted and sought a report by 10 pm on September 26. If the Mayor or Dy Mayor were unavailable, the senior-most member was to preside over the meeting.

The Mayor, Shelly Oberoi, insisted that the election be held on October 5, calling any earlier election illegal. The Lt Governor emphasized the importance of the Standing Committee for municipal functions and directed that the election be held on September 27. Jitender Yadav, Addl Commissioner, was appointed as the Returning Officer, and the election process was to be video-graphed with a ban on mobile phones and electronic gadgets to ensure ballot secrecy.
