Delhi Battles Dengue: Over 4,500 Cases and 3 Deaths in 2024
In New Delhi, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has reported 4,533 dengue cases and three deaths since the start of 2024. The total number of dengue cases in 2023 was 9,266, with 19 deaths. In November 2024 alone, 472 cases were reported, with October seeing the highest number at 2,431 cases. Areas like Najafgarh, South Delhi, Shahdara (North), Karol Bagh, and Central Delhi are the most affected.
Regarding other diseases, 728 malaria cases have been recorded in 2024 with no deaths, and 172 cases of chikungunya have been reported. The government has taken measures by spraying 23,61,013 houses and identifying 2,74,290 houses with mosquito presence. Legal notices have been issued to 1,56,265 households for conditions conducive to mosquito breeding.
The National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control highlights dengue as a rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral fever. The female Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which breeds in water-logged areas, is responsible for spreading dengue. Symptoms include high fever, pain behind the eyes, rashes, unconsciousness, joint and body aches, and vomiting.
