Delhi Basement Flooding: Engineers Suspended, Arrests Made After Tragic Incident at Coaching Centre
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken disciplinary action against officials following a tragic basement flooding incident in Old Rajinder Nagar, New Delhi, which resulted in the deaths of three students.
Disciplinary Actions
Assistant Engineer Vishram Meena has been suspended, and Junior Engineer Vinay Mittal’s contract has been terminated. These actions were taken amid student protests and an investigation into the incident.
Arrests Made
Delhi police have arrested seven individuals, including the driver of an SUV and the owners of the basement. DCP (Central) M Harshvardhan stated that the driver was driving recklessly, causing the gate of the coaching centre to break and leading to the flooding.
Victims
Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nevin Dalwin from Kerala lost their lives in the incident. Fourteen other students were treated and discharged from Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

The MCD has sealed the basements of 13 coaching centres in Karol Bagh for violating building by-laws. Mayor Shelly Oberoi has directed strict action against illegal operations in basements. Earth movers were used to clear encroachments over drains in the area following student protests.
