Delhi Airport Terminal 1 Closed After Canopy Collapse

On June 28, 2024, a canopy at Terminal 1 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed due to heavy rains and winds, resulting in one death and eight injuries. Following the incident, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) announced that Terminal 1 operations are suspended until further notice. All flights have been moved to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.

Flight Operations Update

Delhi Airport confirmed that all flights from Terminal 1 are now operating from Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. IndiGo and SpiceJet have issued advisories to inform passengers about the changes. Passengers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

Passenger Advisory

IndiGo and SpiceJet have communicated the terminal changes to passengers via SMS, email, and social media. Passengers are urged to allow extra travel time and stay updated on their flight status.

Investigation and Response

DIAL has formed a technical committee to investigate the cause of the collapse. Initial reports suggest that heavy rainfall was the primary cause. Rescue operations were promptly carried out by the Delhi Airport Emergency Response Team, and all individuals were evacuated from Terminal 1.

Support and Compensation

DIAL is working with various agencies to assess the situation and restore operations. Four vehicles were damaged, and the injured received immediate medical assistance. DIAL has announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the family of the deceased and Rs 3 lakh for those with minor injuries.
