Deepak Mankar Resigns as NCP Pune President Over MLC Nomination Snub
Deepak Mankar, the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Pune, has offered to resign. He is disappointed after being denied a Member of Legislative Council (MLC) post under the governor’s quota. This decision follows the resignation of over 600 party members in protest of Mankar’s exclusion from the MLC nominations.
Mankar, who has been active in politics for 40 years and served as NCP chief for 14 months, expressed his dismay. He questioned the merit of Pankaj Bhujbal and Idris Naikwadi, who were nominated for the MLC positions, suggesting their selection was unjustified.
“Being active in politics for 40 years and in NCP for several years, also holding the NCP Chief post for the last 14 months, despite my merit, I have been denied the post. This is very disappointing for my supporters and party workers in Pune,” Mankar stated. He plans to consult with his supporters and hold talks with Ajit Pawar before making further decisions.
The developments have sparked uncertainty within the NCP ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections. Mankar highlighted the efforts of party workers during the Lok Sabha election for the Mahayuti Candidate, which resulted in BJP Candidate Murlidhar Mohol’s election with good leads in Pune city constituency.
On Tuesday, seven MLCs were sworn in after a list was released by the government recommending candidates from the ruling Mahayuti alliance. The NCP nominees include former MLA and Chhagan Bhujbal’s son Pankaj Bhujbal, and Idris Naikwadi. The Shiv Sena nominated former MLC Manish Kayande and former Lok Sabha MP Hemant Patil, while the BJP nominated its state women’s wing chief Chitra Wagh, state general secretary Vikrant Patil, and spiritual leader of the Banjara community Dharmaguru Babusingh Maharaj Rathod.
A total of 12 MLC posts were vacant under the governor quota since 2021 when the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance was in power.
