A heated debate has erupted in the Indian Parliament over the installation of the ‘Sengol,’ a traditional symbol of authority. Samajwadi Party MP RK Chaudhary criticized it as a symbol of monarchy, calling for its removal to uphold democracy. BJP leaders and Union Ministers defended the Sengol, emphasizing its cultural significance and parliamentary traditions. The Sengol was installed by PM Modi in May 2023, a historic artifact first accepted by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1947.

RK Chaudhary’s Remarks

RK Chaudhary, a Member of Parliament from the Samajwadi Party, called the Sengol a symbol of monarchy and demanded its removal from Parliament to protect the Constitution.

BJP’s Response

BJP leader CR Kesavan called Chaudhary’s comments outrageous and disrespectful to millions of devotees and the sanctity of Parliament. Union Minister Anupriya Patel questioned the Samajwadi Party’s stance during the Sengol’s installation. Union Minister BL Verma emphasized the importance of understanding parliamentary traditions.

Other Opinions

RJD MP Misa Bharti suggested that the Sengol be placed in a museum, while SP chief Akhilesh Yadav defended Chaudhary, suggesting his remarks were a reminder to the Prime Minister.

Historical Context

On May 28, 2023, PM Narendra Modi installed the historic Sengol in the Lok Sabha chamber. This Sengol was previously accepted by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on the night of August 14, 1947.
