Danish MPs Visit Taiwan Despite Beijing’s Protests
Four Danish members of parliament have traveled to Taiwan, ignoring protests from Beijing. The delegation, led by Pia Kjaersgaard, a former speaker of the Danish Parliament, is visiting from November 10 to 16. They are discussing Denmark’s policy requiring Taiwanese individuals to list themselves as Chinese on identification documents.

The group includes Mikkel Bjorn from the Danish People’s Party, Steffen Larsen of the Liberal Alliance, and Kim Aas of the Social Democrats, along with Henrik Thorup, an advisor to the Danish People’s Party. The visit was organized by the Taiwan Friendship Association in Denmark.
Meetings and Discussions
On Monday, the MPs met with Joseph Wu, Taiwan’s National Security Council Secretary-General, to discuss China’s expansion, Taiwan’s international participation, and trade relations. Wu thanked the delegation for their support. Kjaersgaard emphasized the need for international support for Taiwan, while Larsen criticized the Danish policy on Taiwanese identification as “nonsense.”
Future Plans
The delegation plans to meet with President Lai Ching-te and discuss the identification policy further. Kjaersgaard intends to address the issue with Denmark’s foreign minister upon her return.
