Cyclone Dana: East Coast Railway and Odisha Government Prepare for Impact
As Cyclone Dana approaches, expected to make landfall at midnight on October 24 and 25, the East Coast Railway has taken significant measures to ensure public safety. General Manager Parmeshwar Funkwal stated that the railway is “fully geared” to face the cyclone, with Emergency Response Teams and ‘War rooms’ in operation. Around 203 trains have been diverted, short-terminated, or cancelled, with special focus on the Bhubaneswar to Bhadrak and Paradeep sections.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has emphasized minimizing the impact on passenger services while ensuring maximum safety. In Andhra Pradesh, fishermen have been advised to avoid the sea due to rough conditions, and similar warnings have been issued for West Bengal’s Digha Beach.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi highlighted the state’s efforts to ensure zero casualties. The government has evacuated 3 lakh people, prepared over 7,000 cyclone shelters, and ensured the safety of pregnant women. Medical and veterinary teams, along with police, have been deployed to provide security. Each minister is overseeing operations in 10 districts, with NDRF and ODRAF teams stationed in affected areas. Landfall is expected near Dhamra Port and Bhitarkanika Park in Odisha.
