CPI(M) Plans Campaign Against ‘One Nation, One Election’ and Other Issues
The Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), has announced a week-long campaign in each state from October 15 to November 15, 2024. This campaign will address several issues, including the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, rising prices, reduction in petrol and diesel prices, unemployment, privatization of basic services, and crimes against women and children.
The Central Committee of CPI(M) met in New Delhi on September 29-30 and decided on this campaign. They issued a statement on Tuesday detailing their plans.
Opposition Leaders Criticize ‘One Nation, One Election’
Several opposition leaders have voiced their concerns about the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative. Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh accused the BJP of running fake propaganda, claiming that the initiative is a way to waste money. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar argued that the proposal would negatively impact regional parties.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also criticized the initiative, questioning why the BJP conducts so many rallies if they are truly concerned about expenses. He suggested that the BJP might eventually question the need for an Election Commission, claiming it is an unnecessary expense.
Details of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ Proposal
The Cabinet has approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, which aims to hold simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections, along with urban body and panchayat polls, within 100 days. A High-level Committee on Simultaneous Elections, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, submitted its report to President Droupadi Murmu earlier this year. The report, consisting of 18,626 pages, is based on extensive consultations and research conducted over 191 days since the committee’s formation on September 2, 2023.
