CPI MP P Sandosh Kumar Urges Eminence Status for JNU Amid Financial Struggles

New Delhi [India], August 18: Communist Party of India (CPI) Rajya Sabha floor leader P Sandosh Kumar has called on the Union Ministry for Education to grant Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) the status of Institute of Eminence. In a letter to Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Kumar raised concerns about the financial difficulties faced by JNU and other public universities.

Kumar criticized a proposal by JNU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Santishree D Pandit, to sell or rent university properties to address funding shortages. He argued that this move could lead to privatization of prime locations and highlighted the reduction in government expenditure on research and public education.

He emphasized that many students at JNU come from low-income backgrounds and warned that neglecting public education could make higher education accessible only to the wealthy. Kumar also pointed out issues such as deteriorating infrastructure, delayed faculty promotions, and students protesting for timely and increased scholarships.

MP P Sandosh Kumar from Kerala stressed that education is a public good and crucial for the country’s future, urging zero negligence towards the sector.
