Court to Decide Charges Against Jagdish Tytler in 1984 Sikh Killing Case
New Delhi, July 19: The Rouse Avenue court has reserved its decision on whether to frame charges against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in a case related to the killing of Sikhs in the Pul Bangash area in 1984. The court is expected to announce its decision on August 2.

This case involves the tragic killing of three Sikhs, Thakur Singh, Badal Singh, and Gurcharan Singh, near the Pul Bangash Gurudwara on November 1, 1984, following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Special CBI judge Rakesh Siyal heard arguments from both the CBI and Jagdish Tytler’s defense counsel, Manu Sharma. Sharma presented a video showing Tytler at Teen Murthy House on the day of the incident, which was disputed by the CBI and senior advocate HS Phoolka, representing the riot victims.
The CBI argued that there were eyewitnesses who saw Tytler inciting the mob during the 1984 riots. The CBI’s counsel read statements from four eyewitnesses, including Surender Singh, who claimed to have seen Tytler inciting the mob.

The CBI filed a supplementary charge sheet against Tytler in May 2023. Tytler appeared before the court on August 5, 2023, following a summons. He was granted anticipatory bail on August 4, 2023.
The Justice Nanavati Commission of Inquiry, set up in 2000, led to the CBI’s investigation into the case. The CBI registered the case in November 2005, alleging that Tytler incited the mob that burned the Gurudwara Pul Bangash and killed three Sikhs.
