Court Reserves Decision on Bail for Engineer Rashid in 2017 Terror Funding Case

Delhi’s Patiala House Court has reserved its decision on the bail plea of Engineer Rashid, a jailed parliamentarian, in a 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case. Rashid, who won the Baramulla seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is currently in Tihar jail. The court will announce its decision on September 4. The National Investigation Agency has opposed the bail plea.

Engineer Rashid, also known as Sheikh Abdul Rashid, was arrested in 2017 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He has filed a second regular bail application. Earlier, the court granted him a two-hour custody parole on July 5 to take the oath as a Member of Parliament.

In 2005, Rashid was arrested by the Special Operations Group in Srinagar for allegedly supporting militants and was held for over three months. However, all charges were later dropped on humanitarian grounds. Despite being in jail, Rashid filed his nomination for the 2024 parliamentary elections and won by a margin of 204,000 votes, defeating former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
