Court Rejects Aftab Poonawala’s Plea to Delay Trial in Shraddha Walkar’s Case
New Delhi, India – The Saket District Court has turned down Aftab Amin Poonawala’s request to hold his trial only twice a month. Poonawala is accused in the murder case of Shraddha Walkar. The court, led by Special Fast Track Court Judge Manish Khurana Kakkar, stated that Poonawala was attempting to delay the trial deliberately.
The court noted that many witnesses still need to be examined, and only 134 out of 212 prosecution witnesses have been heard since June 2023. The court emphasized the need for consecutive hearing dates to expedite the trial.
Vikas Walkar, Shraddha’s father, has requested the release of her bones for her last rites. The court acknowledged his right to a dignified cremation for his daughter but noted that the bones are still needed for the trial. The court assured that the matter would be expedited, and some bones might be released at an appropriate stage.
Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad supported the need for consecutive hearing dates to complete the examination of witnesses. The court highlighted that the defense counsel had previously missed dates set for cross-examination, further delaying the trial.
