Court Denies Arvind Kejriwal Extra Lawyer Meetings in Jail

The Rouse Avenue court in New Delhi has denied Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s request for two additional video conferencing meetings with his lawyers from Tihar Jail. Kejriwal is currently in judicial custody over the Delhi Excise Policy case.

Judge’s Decision

Special judge Kaveri Baweja dismissed the application, stating that Kejriwal’s counsel failed to provide new reasons for the additional meetings. The judge noted that a similar request had already been denied on April 10, 2024, and there were no new grounds to reconsider the decision.

Previous Orders

The court referenced previous orders, including one from February 22, 2024, which granted additional meetings to co-accused Sanjay Singh. However, the judge differentiated this case from Kejriwal’s.

Reasons for Request

Kejriwal’s counsel argued that he is involved in about 30 litigations across the country and needs more meetings to ensure a fair trial. They also mentioned a recent arrest by the CBI as a reason for the additional meetings.

Despite these arguments, the court found no reason to change its earlier decision and dismissed the application on July 1.
