Court Delays Hearing in Anti-Sikh Riots Case Against Sajjan Kumar Due to Hospitalization

The Rouse Avenue court in New Delhi has postponed the final arguments in an anti-Sikh riots case against former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, who is currently hospitalized. This case involves the tragic killing of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh in the Saraswati Vihar area during the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots.

Details of the Case

Special judge (CBI) Kaveri Baweja has rescheduled the hearing to July 18. Sajjan Kumar’s counsel, Anil Kumar Sharma, informed the court about Kumar’s hospitalization. The case was initially registered at the Panjabi Bagh police station and later investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed on the recommendation of Justice G P Mathur’s committee.

Charges and Allegations

On December 16, 2021, the court framed charges against Sajjan Kumar for various offences, including rioting, murder, and looting. The SIT alleges that Kumar led a mob that burned alive Jaswant Singh and Tarundeep Singh, destroyed their property, and inflicted severe injuries on their family members.

During the investigation, key witnesses were traced and their statements recorded. The complainant’s statement, recorded on November 23, 2016, detailed the looting, arson, and murders, as well as the injuries suffered by her and other victims.
