Cooper Connolly’s Exciting First Call to Australia’s T20I Team

Cooper Connolly, a 20-year-old all-rounder from Australia, has been selected for the national T20I team for their upcoming tour in the UK. Connolly, who has played 15 domestic T20 matches, was a standout player in the Big Bash League 2022-23 final, scoring 25* off 11 balls for the Perth Scorchers. He also impressed in his Sheffield Shield debut with a score of 90 against Tasmania.

Connolly described the moment he learned of his selection as ‘surreal,’ saying, ‘I couldn’t sit still, I was walking around for about 10-15 minutes. It’s nice to have done a few things with a great team, and it obviously gives me some confidence.’

Australia’s national selector, George Bailey, highlighted Connolly’s experience and versatility, noting his impressive performance in the middle order and his handy left-arm spin. Bailey compared Connolly’s potential to that of successful players like Matty Wade and Marcus Stoinis.

The Baggy Greens will play a three-match T20I series against Scotland on September 4, 6, and 7, followed by a series against England starting on September 11. Australia will also play five ODIs against England later in the month.
