Congress Promises to Restore Jammu and Kashmir’s Statehood, Criticizes BJP’s Actions
New Delhi, India – Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari announced that Congress will restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood if they come to power in the upcoming assembly polls. Tiwari criticized the BJP-led central government for reducing Jammu and Kashmir’s status to a Union Territory, calling it an unjust and shortsighted decision.
In August 2019, the Indian government abrogated Article 370, ending Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and reorganizing it into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
On Wednesday, Congress released a document titled “Kya khoya, kya paya Jammu and Kashmir charge sheet sab kuch khoya, kuch nahi paya,” accusing the BJP of failing on issues like unemployment, agriculture, education, health, and statehood. The document also targeted Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, alleging that the voice of the people in Jammu and Kashmir is being suppressed.
According to the document, Jammu and Kashmir has the second-highest unemployment rate in the country, with 65% of government posts remaining vacant since 2019. It also accused the LG’s office of encouraging corruption and awarding contracts to cronies.
In response, BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh accused Congress of causing harm to the region for over 70 years and depriving its people of development and progress. He claimed that Congress, along with NC and PDP, has been waging a proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir to spread violence and disturbance.
The first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections will see 219 candidates, with voting scheduled for September 18. Polling will be conducted in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the counting of votes on October 8.
