Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge Criticizes BJP for Violence in Manipur
On Sunday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the BJP-led NDA governments for the ongoing violence in Manipur. He stated that Manipur is neither united nor safe under BJP’s leadership. Kharge accused the BJP of engaging in divisive politics, suggesting that the party wants Manipur to remain in turmoil to serve its political interests.
Kharge expressed his concerns on social media, addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly. He highlighted the pain and division Manipur has faced since May 2023, claiming that the BJP’s actions have destroyed the future of the state’s people. He further stated that the governments have failed the people of Manipur, and they will not forgive or forget the neglect they have experienced.
Since November 7, at least 17 people have died, and new districts have been affected by the violence. In response, Manipur police have arrested 23 individuals involved in recent disturbances, recovering weapons and mobile phones. A curfew has been imposed in Imphal, and internet services have been suspended. Security forces, including the Army and Assam Rifles, have been deployed to maintain order.
Manipur Police reported that mobs targeted properties of public representatives, leading to the use of tear gas by police to disperse crowds. Eight people were injured during these events.
