Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge Criticizes PM Modi Over Manipur Violence

New Delhi [India], September 9: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a strong criticism against Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the recent surge in violence, drone, and rocket-propelled grenade attacks in Manipur.

In a post on X, Kharge stated, “PM Modi’s abject failure in Manipur is unforgivable.” He mentioned that former Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey echoed the sentiments of the people, who are upset and sad because PM Modi has not visited them.

Kharge highlighted that in the past 16 months, PM Modi has not spent any time in Manipur, despite the ongoing violence. He accused the BJP’s Manipur Chief Minister of incompetence and reported that the CM demanded the transfer of the ‘Unified Command’ to the state government. The Unified Command, which oversees security operations in Manipur, is currently managed by Union Home Ministry officials, the state security adviser, and the Indian Army.

Kharge also criticized the Union Home Minister for neglecting his constitutional responsibility to ensure security in Manipur. He pointed out that the situation has escalated to a national security threat with drone and rocket-propelled grenade attacks.

The Congress President demanded the immediate dismissal of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and called for the Union Government to take full responsibility for the security situation. He urged for a massive crackdown on insurgent groups with the help of state forces and expedited investigations by the Supreme Court-mandated Manipur Commission of Inquiry into ethnic violence.

Kharge emphasized the need for peace and normalcy by involving all political parties, representatives, and civil society members. He questioned why PM Modi has not taken steps to end the violence in Manipur.

Earlier, students from various schools, colleges, and universities in Imphal rallied towards the Raj Bhavan, demanding the resignation of key officials and the withdrawal of paramilitary forces. They carried banners and posters as they marched.
