Congress MPs Shashi Tharoor and Jebi Mather Visit Family of Drowned Student in Delhi
New Delhi [India], July 29: Congress MPs Shashi Tharoor and Jebi Mather visited the family of Nevin Dalvin, one of the students who drowned in a flooded basement at a coaching center in Old Rajinder Nagar. They met the family at RML Hospital, where the bodies of the deceased students are kept.
Tharoor urged the government to provide compensation, stating, “This is shameful, there is no doubt about it. The dreams of those youth have been shattered, and the hopes of their families have been snuffed too. This is extremely saddening for the country, for its future and the future of the youth.”
Jebi Mather highlighted the government’s and MCD’s failure, saying, “The family of the boy from Kerala is here and the postmortem is going to happen, so we wouldn’t want to make this an issue at the moment but the fact remains that there is a gross failure on the part of both the government and the MCD and such instances are becoming very common because such coaching centres with no proper facilities are being done.”
Congress MP Manickam Tagore called for accountability and urged against petty politics, emphasizing the need for solutions to infrastructure problems in Delhi.
Student protests in Karol Bagh continued, with protestors demanding compensation and accountability. Sahil, a UPSC aspirant, complained that no MCD officials visited them. Manish Kumar, another student, pointed out that biometric access issues contributed to the tragedy.
The MCD sealed 13 coaching centers in Karol Bagh for violating building by-laws. Mayor Shelly Oberoi directed strict action against illegal coaching centers. The Delhi Police arrested seven people, including the coaching center owner, for culpable homicide. DCP Central M Harshavardhan confirmed ongoing investigations and appealed for peace from protesting students.
