Congress MP Manish Tewari Calls for Parliament Discussion on Bangladesh Unrest

New Delhi [India], August 6: Congress MP Manish Tewari has urged the central government to facilitate a discussion in both Houses of Parliament regarding the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh. Speaking to reporters, Tewari described the situation in Bangladesh as ‘sensitive’ and ‘serious,’ with implications for South Asia and East Asia.

Tewari has given an adjournment notice asking the house to suspend the zero hour and relevant rules to discuss the matter. He also urged the government to inform the house about the steps being taken to address potential security, economic, and diplomatic repercussions.

Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) MP NK Premachandran also emphasized the need for the Indian government to clarify its position on the Bangladesh issue. He expressed concern that disturbances in Bangladesh would affect India, given its proximity.

The political situation in Bangladesh remains volatile following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation amid escalating protests. These demonstrations, initially driven by students demanding an end to the quota system for government jobs, have evolved into broader anti-government protests.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar chaired an all-party meeting in Delhi to brief leaders about the situation in Bangladesh. The meeting was attended by prominent leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and others. Jaishankar explained how the issue had developed and mentioned that Sheikh Hasina had moved to India, with India taking care of her.

Recent clashes in Dhaka have resulted in at least 135 fatalities, including 14 police officers, with hundreds more injured. Following her resignation, Sheikh Hasina arrived in India on Monday evening. It is unclear whether she will stay in Delhi or travel to another location, with some reports suggesting she might proceed to London.
