Congress MP Manickam Tagore Urges Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to Allow Journalists Full Access to Parliament
New Delhi [India], June 30: Congress MP Manickam Tagore has requested Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to allow full access to all accredited journalists covering the proceedings of Parliament. Tagore emphasized that the press plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency and holding the government accountable.
In a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Tagore highlighted that several established journalists, who have been covering Parliament for over a decade, are facing undue restrictions due to COVID-19 protocols. He acknowledged the importance of health and safety measures but argued that these restrictions are adversely impacting the free and fair coverage of parliamentary proceedings.
Tagore stated that accredited journalists possess a deep understanding of parliamentary procedures and contribute significantly to informed public discourse. Preventing them from accessing Parliament hampers their professional duties and restricts the flow of accurate information to the public.
He urged the Speaker to reconsider the current restrictions and allow full access to all accredited journalists, reinforcing the commitment to a free press and ensuring a robust and transparent democracy. Tagore expressed confidence that under Om Birla’s leadership, Parliament will uphold the highest standards of democratic principles.
