New Delhi [India], August 9: The Congress Party has submitted an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha, calling for the withdrawal of Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya’s statement regarding Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification. Congress MP Manickam Tagore criticized Mandaviya’s comment about the Rs. 70.45575 lakhs spent on Phogat, calling it a deflection.
Tagore expressed that Phogat’s disqualification due to a minor weight discrepancy has shattered her Olympic dreams and disappointed many Indians. He condemned Mandaviya’s statement and urged the government to take the issue seriously, emphasizing that athletes need genuine support rather than financial figures.
Mandaviya had stated in the Lok Sabha that the Indian government provided Phogat with all necessary financial assistance, including a renowned coach, physio, and various specialists, totaling Rs. 70,45,775 for her Olympic preparations.
In a related development, senior advocate Harish Salve will represent the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) hearing regarding Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics. Salve’s expertise is expected to be crucial in addressing the legal aspects of the dispute.
Following her disqualification, Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling, expressing her sense of defeat and gratitude in an emotional post.
