Congress MP Manickam Tagore Criticizes Early Adjournment of Parliament Session
New Delhi [India], August 9: Congress MP Manickam Tagore expressed his disapproval of the early adjournment of both Houses of Parliament, stating that it is not a ‘good practice.’ He also pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended only three days of the Monsoon session.
On Friday, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned sine die, one sitting ahead of the scheduled end of the session on August 12. Tagore posted on X, ‘Though the Monsoon Session was scheduled till 12th August, both Houses adjourned sine die today. This is not a good practice! In Lok Sabha, PM Modi attended only 3 days of this session. See you in December Parliament.’
During the session, the Finance Bill was passed, and a bill to amend the Waqf Amendment law was introduced and referred to a joint committee of Parliament amid protests. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla informed that the Finance Minister presented the Union Budget 2024-2025 on July 23, 2024, and the general discussion on it lasted for 27 hours and 19 minutes with 181 Members participating. The Finance Minister replied to the discussion on July 30.
Om Birla also reported that 12 Government Bills were introduced and four Bills were passed during the session. The passed bills include The Finance Bill, 2024, The Appropriation Bill, 2024, The Jammu and Kashmir Appropriation Bill, 2024, and The Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak, 2024.
The Rajya Sabha faced multiple adjournments due to opposition protests and a walkout by Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar. Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan demanded an apology from Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar after a heated exchange over remarks made by BJP MP Ghanshyam Tiwari against Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge.
Om Birla stated that the productivity of the House was above 130 per cent, specifically 136 per cent. Opposition parties, including the Congress, DMK, NCP, Trinamool Congress, and AIMIM, strongly opposed the introduction of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, arguing that its provisions were against federalism and constitutional principles. Some members called for the bill’s withdrawal, while others suggested it be sent to a standing committee.
