Congress MP Kiran Kumar Chamala Discusses Bangladesh’s Volatile Situation and Its Lessons for Democracy

New Delhi [India], August 6: Congress MP Kiran Kumar Chamala on Tuesday emphasized that the volatile situation in Bangladesh serves as a lesson for all democratic countries. He stressed that governments must make decisions for the people. Chamala stated, “The situation in Bangladesh serves as a nice example because it is our neighbouring country which is going through such a phase. In democracy, we must be careful. We should never have overconfidence. The reservation and related things were not properly discussed and things got provoked and suddenly after so many years democracy derailed in Bangladesh. We must learn from such things.”

Chamala also expressed concern over the potential impact of the tense situation in Bangladesh on India, noting, “There are so many Bangladeshis here also. We are connected to Bangladesh. The government must take care that any situation in Bangladesh does not provoke any kind of situation here.”

Meanwhile, another Congress MP, K Suresh, emphasized the need for a serious discussion in Parliament. He said, “The situation in Bangladesh is serious and unexpected… Bangladesh is our neighbouring country and the situation there is unimaginable. We should discuss this matter seriously in the Parliament. So, we have moved an Adjournment Motion in the Parliament.”

The political situation in Bangladesh remains volatile following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation amid escalating protests. These demonstrations, largely driven by students demanding an end to the quota system for government jobs, have evolved into broader anti-government protests. Recent clashes in Dhaka have resulted in at least 135 fatalities, including 14 police officers, with hundreds more injured. Following her resignation, Sheikh Hasina arrived in India on Monday evening. It is unclear whether she will stay in Delhi or travel to another location, with some reports suggesting she might proceed to London.
