Congress Leaders Jairam Ramesh and Mallikarjun Kharge Demand Caste Census in India

New Delhi [India], October 2: Congress leaders are calling for a nationwide caste census. Jairam Ramesh stated that the caste system has been part of India’s structure for centuries and questioned if demanding a caste census is casteism. He said, “Is bringing social empowerment casteism? Is safeguarding the Constitution casteism?” Ramesh also called for a constitutional amendment to increase the reservation limit from 50%.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge added that the caste census is needed to bring in welfare measures and emphasized that Congress is patriotic. He criticized those who opposed the census, stating that they have worked against the country and the Constitution.

Several opposition parties, including Congress, RJD, and NCP-SCP, support the demand for a caste-based census to obtain accurate data on the population of different caste groups.
