Congress Leader Sofia Firdous Criticizes BJP Over Kolkata Doctor’s Tragic Death
In Kolkata, West Bengal, Congress leader Sofia Firdous criticized the central government over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. She stated that despite 10 years of BJP rule, crimes are still increasing, reflecting the country’s current condition.
Firdous recalled the 2012 Nirbhaya case, noting that criminal laws were amended during the Congress government in 2013. She questioned the effectiveness of fast-track courts, asking how many cases were solved and how many criminals were punished.
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of not supporting the investigation into the case, fearing it might reveal sensitive secrets. He claimed Banerjee is trying to divert attention by making inflammatory statements, but the case has sparked widespread protests and become a mass movement.
West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar wrote to Governor CV Ananda Bose, seeking intervention over Banerjee’s remarks. Majumdar accused Banerjee of inciting violence and demanded her resignation. He emphasized the duty of public servants to foster peace and discourage violence.
In response, Mamata Banerjee clarified her remarks, stating she supports the student movement and did not threaten anyone. She condemned BJP’s 12-hour ‘Bengal Bandh,’ accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using his party to cause unrest in Bengal.
Former cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh also spoke out, calling for tougher laws to prevent such crimes and emphasizing the importance of women’s safety. He stated that the issue would be raised in Parliament.
