Congress Leader Manickam Tagore Calls for Caste Census After Supreme Court Ruling

New Delhi [India], August 12: Congress MP Manickam Tagore has voiced his concerns about the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and their stance on the caste hierarchy. Tagore stated that the RSS wants to maintain the caste system with upper castes at the top and lower castes at the bottom. He emphasized the need for a caste census to address and eliminate caste-based discrimination.

Tagore’s comments come in the wake of a significant Supreme Court ruling on August 1. The ruling allows states to subclassify Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) to ensure better representation. The judgement was delivered by a seven-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, with a majority of 6:1 in favor of sub-classification.

Justice BR Gavai suggested that states should develop a policy to identify and exclude the creamy layer within SCs and STs from affirmative action benefits. However, Justice Bela M. Trivedi dissented, disagreeing with the majority opinion on sub-classification.

The ruling overruled a previous judgement in the EV Chinnaiah case, which had held that sub-classification was not permissible as SCs and STs were considered homogenous classes.
